The D-42LE was reintroduced as one of the C.F. Martin "Guitars Of The Month" Series in 1988. Prior to this series, there was only one D-42 ever made in 1934, and given to radio star Tex Fletcher. This original guitar can now be seen on display in the C. F. Martin museum.
For the limited-edition '88 model, C.F. "Chris" Martin IV personally designed this iteration of the D-42. Only 75 units were made for the entire year! It has the same top features as a D-45, including abalone pearl around the top and the soundhole rosette has a connecting abalone link around the end of the fingerboard. Additional personal touches by Chris are the highly colored abalone hexagon inlays which adorn the fingerboard and bridge. Martin's time tested scalloped top bracing with a forward "X" brace that crosses 1" from the soundhole, provides the structural support needed for years of reliability and that renowned tone. The top is tightly grained Engelmann spruce, Indian Rosewood back and sides, and an ebony bridge. The tuning machines are Schaller with ebony buttons which really add a magnificent finishing touch to this guitar.
